Swiss Premiere at Papiliorama: Two Central-American Agoutis born in Kerzers!
What a surprise for the Papiliorama team on the morning of the 8th of May: looking out of a hollow tree trunk were two furry balls with four expressive eyes making their first encounter with Homo sapiens. No one imagined the female of this large central American rodent being pregnant. The parents arrived at Papiliorama from the Zoo of Neunkirchen/ Saar only a few months ago and seem to have adapted well to their new surroundings. It's the first time that this agouti species (Dasyprocta punctata), which lives in the tropical forests of Central America, is on show in Switzerland.
Since a few days, the young are accompanying their mother through the enclosure and giving a great show to the visitors. Albeit their lively caracter they are still very shy and hide immediately when they feel menaced. They are thus rather difficult to take a good picture of....
The agoutis can be seen during the entire opening hours. They are most active in the morning and in the second half of the afternoon.
